ARTiculations: The Body, The Self

Making art is a revealing process that places the artist in a position of public vulnerability few of us ever risk. For artists who use their bodies as imagery
in their art, this sense of exposure is amplified. Lyle Ashton Harris and Liz Cohen discuss the complexities of their very-different representations of the body and concepts of self-performance. Gallery Talk on Automotive Design

Join Paul Wachowski for a behind-the-scenes look at automotive design and a discussion of the impact of the automobile on our visual world. Wachowski was a creative designer for General Motors and was later part of the team that developed the first digital, three-dimensional modeling system for automotive production. Wachowski has been an adjunct professor at the California College of the Arts, Oakland and San Francisco. He is a graduate of the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California. Radical Mod:A low-rider car show and warm-up for SMoCA Nights: DRIVE

Artist Liz Cohen (who has taught herself the high craft of car customization) has organized a public showcase of fabulous, customized cars and bicycles that cruise close to the ground, bounce and flash. These elaborately engineered and adorned vehicles have spinning truck beds, pop-up hoods, suicide doors and more. Don’t miss your chance to meet the award-winning creators and owners. The event also features music, vendors and other festivities. On Second Street, just east of SMoCA. Presented by the Scottsdale Public Art Program in conjunction with Car Culture.
This free public event is a prelude to the afterhours extravaganza, SMoCA Nights: DRIVE.

ARTiculations: Video Screening with Hans Op de Beeck

Belgian artist Hans Op de Beeck talks about his work and screens videos,
including Determination (4), 1998; Coffee, 1999; Situation (1), 2000; and
All together now..., 2005. Op de Beeck stages scenarios that seem extremely
familiar yet reflect alternative perspectives on time, place and social space. This program is presented in conjunction with Car Culture and is made possible by a grant from ASU’s Future Arts Research [F.A.R]. Meet in the Museum lobby.

The new technologies for cinema and the automobile arrived almost
simultaneously. For over a century, filmmakers have used the car as both
an amazing stunt device and as a vehicle for addressing our restlessness, material aspirations, violence and identity. Join us as we trace over a hundred years of the car on the big screen. See clips ranging from the Keystone Cops to Herbie to The Italian Job, with the amazing commentary of Dr. Diane Gruber, who teaches film and mass media in the Department of Communication Studies, ASU, and directs ASU Lifelong Learning. Sculpture Workshop with Margarita Cabrera

Margarita Cabrera’s life-size, hand-sewn vinyl Hummer in Car Culture inspired this hands-on workshop on soft sculpture. Bring a small found object to fashion into a funky vinyl replica.
