Performance artist Antonio
Ortega, (visiting from Barcelona, Spain), will do a stand-up
routine with surprising juxtapositions and hilarious self-questioning
on the evening of the opening. His art is inspired by the culture of frikis
[freaks], fans in their thirties and forties who came of age during the
heyday of heavy-metal culture and valiantly hold onto their hard-rock
roots. Ortega’s other muse is the espontaneo (“spontaneous”
fan)—those who, for example, jump into the bull ring to grab attention
and emulate the star of the show. For his performance at SMoCA, Ortega takes on the
subject of local celebrity Alice Cooper. Support for
Ortega’s performance was provided by The Cultural Office, Embassy
of Spain, Washington D.C. and The Ministry of Culture, Spain. Stage
2 Theater. $5 members; $7 nonmembers. Call 480-994-ARTS [2787] for tickets. |
