Art Express is an exciting, after-school program at Emerson Elementary School. It includes workshops with teaching artists, a field trip and docent-led tour of the Museum and a culminating event held at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. The program enlists the arts—visual arts, music, dance and theatre—as a tool to increase conceptual abilities, self-confidence, critical thinking and social skills, in ongoing after-school instruction. The desired outcome is to reinforce new vocabulary, writing, memory and math—alongside learning about art and developing visual literacy.

EXHIBITIONS:
May 14, 2009 – Jan. 3, 2010
VISIONS is SMoCA’s art program for teens that encourages creative self-expression and civic engagement. This exhibition titled Juxtapositions showcases the work of participating teens from Central, Coronado, Desert Mountain, McClintock and Shadow Mountain high schools. The work is the result of students’ conversations and workshops with professional artists over the course of the year.

February 12 – April 22, 2010
For children who have been hurt emotionally, drawing can serve as
the language that speaks to caring professionals often before speech
can. This exhibition explores how art therapy works miracles for
children who have been the victims of abuse or suffered trauma in their
lives. Displayed artworks are from Valley children who have attended
programs or sessions at Childhelp, a non-profit organization dedicated
to the investigation and treatment of child abuse. |
Opens May 13, 2010
Teens today communicate with technology that has shaped a new
language. Text messaging and emailing encourage the abbreviations of
words and phrases that are decipherable only to their own generation.
Popular culture feeds us messages through advertising in the form of
slogans and logos that we all immediately recognize. Many contemporary
artists also use text juxtaposed with visual imagery. Students from
Central, Coronado, Marcos de Niza and McClintock high schools met
with local and national artists through VISIONS, SMoCA’s teen program.
This exhibition is the result of ideas and conversations sparked by these
monthly meetings. |
