Contemporary Catalyst Award
Joe Baker, the Heard Museum’s Lloyd Kiva New Curator of Fine Art, received the SMoCA’s second Contemporary Catalyst Award. The award acknowledges an individual in the creative sector in the greater metropolitan area who, through his or her professional or civic activities, has raised the profile of art, architecture and design in the Valley and has contributed to the quality of our cultural community.

A total of seven nominees were honored at the event: Joe Baker; Evonne Bowling; Jack DeBartolo Jr. and Jack DeBartolo III of DeBartolo Architects Ltd.; Suzanne and Michael Johnson; Kimber Lanning; Scott Lyon and Bill Nassikas of Westroc Hotels and Resorts; and Joanne Rapp.

Each candidate was judged on the criteria of vision, advocacy, originality and prominence. The nominees are the cultural entrepreneurs and out-of-the-box thinkers in our midst who truly contribute to the growth and impact of culture in the Valley. This award acknowledges the nominees’ risk-taking creativity and contributions to civic life. Judges included last year’s award recipients Janie Ellis and Fred Unger; architect Eddie Jones and independent curator Lara Taubman. Award nominators included Linda Herold, Angela Johnson, Gene Kadish, Ed LeBow, Sara Lieberman, Duke Reiter, Louise Roman, Hector Ruiz and Rachel Sacco. The award was coordinated by the Contemporary Catalyst Award Committee which was comprised of Crista Cloutier, Theresa Conte, William Lykins, Greg Sullivan, Mark Vinci and David White.

About the award recipient
Joe Baker is a curator, a teacher, an artist and a leader in the Native American arts community nationally. In his current position as Lloyd Kiva New Curator of Fine Art, Baker has brought groundbreaking exhibitions to the Heard Museum—projects that have vastly expanded the public’s understanding of contemporary Native art and that have, in turn, expanded the possibilities for Native artists. Joe Baker is creative, passionate and global in his approach. He is not afraid to take risks for important causes and to attack cultural artistic stereotypes. He extends a generosity of spirit to his peers that is simply unprecedented in this community. His entrepreneurial efforts have had an impact on urban planning, health and human services, education and preservation. Joe was a founding board member of Roosevelt Row Downtown Development Corporation and of the Indigenous Center for Creative Research. He serves on the advisory committee of the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, among other non-profit involvements.

One lucky individual took home a $30,000 Wild West Vigilante motorcycle, generously donated by Vanguard City Home, after winning the event raffle!

Thank you to everyone who made Celebrity+Style a success. All proceeds from this event and the silent auction support SMoCA’s dynamic exhibitions and public and educational programs for audiences across the Valley.
