This year's Expo spotlights the urgent need to document and discuss the Valley's endangered pool of world-class midcentury modern architecture. This rich program of weekend activities tackles this hot topic with expert information. On Saturday, the Expo takes place at SMoCA and in the facilities of the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Sunday's home tour (SOLD OUT) gives participants an interactive view into restored midcentury modern homes in the Uptown Phoenix and Arcadia neighborhoods. Special tours of the Hotel Valley Ho will also be offered.

  • 11:30 - 12:25 (SOLD OUT) Charlie Ray, Designer, The Green Room

"Cacti and Succulents as Living Sculpture" workshop

  • 12:30 - 1:25  Richard A. Eribes, PhD, AIA, University of Arizona
"Mythic Influence: Calvin C. Straub's Work in Phoenix" (Tickets $5)
After a very successful career designing for the cultural elite in Los Angeles, Cal Straub left California to become a professor at Arizona State University. In addition to an impressive body of work that often fused Arts and Crafts styling with Modern sensibility, Straub also left an indelible impression on the lives of those he taught at ASU. Dick Eribes will provide a biographical sketch and illustrated tour through Straub's significant works, with a spotlight on those he completed in Arizona.
  • 1:30 - 2:25  Julius Shulman, Architectural Photographer, Interviewed by David Tyda, Editor of Desert Living Magazine
"Progress + Preservation Trough the Lens" (Tickets $10)
While architectural photographer Julius Shulman is primarily remembered for his artful documentation of California architecture, it is a little-known and rarely-published fact that Shulman also photographed in Arizona as well. Samples of Shulman's Arizona work will be shown as the pair discusses the importance of preserving architectural treasures. Learn some of Shulman's photography techniques and what it was like to work with some of this century's greatest architects. NOTE: Although our original plan was to speak with Mr. Shulman directly in our auditorium, we have recently learned that he is too frail to travel at this time. An appropriate substitution will make this an interesting alternative to your typical slide show / lecture!
  • 3:30 - 5:00 KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Don Ryden, AIA, Ryden Architects
"The Architecture of Enterprise: Uplifting Design of Modern Phoenix 1945-1975" (Tickets $10)
In 2006, The City of Phoenix Historic Preservation Office contracted Don Ryden to complete a survey of midcentury-era commercial architecture in Phoenix. His findings range from Googie style gimmicks to seriously iconic work by world-renown architects. In this first major study devoted exclusively to the commercial architectural design of Phoenix during this era, Ryden will take us on a lavishly-illustrated armchair tour through both well-recognized and little-known sites.
