Modern Phoenix Week showcases our region’s legacy as hotspot for Midcentury Modern and Contemporary architectural design. This year we’ll Return to Paradise — Paradise Gardens, that is — a 1960s subdivision that is the only example of tract homes involving the input of Arizona architect Alfred Newman Beadle.

Home in Paradise Gardens

Though the extent of his involvement is hotly contested Beadle's touch lingers in the spirit of the homes. Paradise Gardens is one of the Valley's magnets for creative professionals who greatly transform or restore the homes in the Modernist spirit.

Our bustling Modern Market on the light-flooded floor of the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts atrium is the ideal venue to debut your new products or services related to Modernism, architecture, interior design and home renovation. Vintage fashion, jewelry, furniture, lighting and accessory delaers are welcome. Scheduled seminars & lectures are featured throughout the afternoon and all Expo attendees enjoy complimentary admission to the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.

Research Your Midcentury Modern Home Using Primary Resources - 11:00 am
John Jacquemart guides the curious through researching a midcentury home or neighborhood using local resources and online databases. Workshop features access to the Modern Phoenix archives of popular magazines from the 50s and 60s, and John's personal collection of primary sources. FREE.


Creating a New Image: Phoenix Mid-Century Branch Banks - 12:00 pm noon
Donna Reiner Ph.D reveals why the ample stock of quality Mid-Century Modern branch banks in Phoenix is not an accident. Rather than despair over banks that were lost, her slideshow will celebrate the details of our city's commitment to architectural quality. FREE.

 

The Ralph Haver + Jimmie Nunn Partnership: 1952 – 1985  - 1:00 pm
Modern Phoenix Founder Alison King takes the audience through 30+ years of collaboration in one of Phoenix's largest midcentury architecture firms with her lavishly illustrated vintage slide show. FREE.

 

KEYNOTE LECTURE with REED KROLOFF: 2:00 pm

The Arizona School of Architecture: Modern Architecture in Phoenix After the War
By Reed Kroloff, Director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art and former professor at ASU. Post-war Phoenix gave rise to a new school of thought in contemporary architecture. Mr. Kroloff reviews the rise of what he has termed the "Arizona School."

Modern Phoenix Interior Design Scholarship
The Modern Phoenix Interior Design Scholarship is an annual merit based scholarship awarded to a high school graduate interested in studying Interior Design. The scholarship honors the contributions made by the Modern Phoenix organization and its continuing efforts to educate the community and students on the importance and preservation of mid-century design, art and architecture in Phoenix. High school seniors, college transfer students and adult learners are all encouraged to apply. The scholarship winner will be announced at our Expo on April 10, 2010.

Workshops for High School seniors will be held at The Art Institute of Phoenix for prospective Interior Design Scholarship applicants. Get a leg up on the competition!
